#icheckthelabel Boycott Israeli Dates

Ramadhan is around the corner. It is a time of year when we abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset and nourish ourselves spiritually. It is a time when we try to improve our character and reflect on the blessings we have and remember those less fortunate.

When we break our fasts, it would be plainly wrong to eat dates which help continue the oppression of Palestinians. However, many people unknowingly do just that.

Every year, Israel exports millions of pounds worth of dates to the world. These dates may be grown in illegal settlements in the West Bank and the Jordan Valley, on land that has been stolen from Palestinians. By buying these dates, we are helping Israel to continue its occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people.

The 'Check the Label - Boycott Israeli Dates' campaign aims to inform people for the first time, or simply remind them not to break their fast with dates which are from Israel, West Bank or Jordan Valley.

Shamiul Joarder of FOA said 'We have had an amazing response from the community for which we are extremely grateful. Lots of people who hadn't heard our message over the last four years have this year; and that is thanks to our brilliant volunteers who have been putting up posters in mosques, shops and community centres, distributing leaflets after prayers outside mosques as well as spreading the message on social media.'
